The name of the band has roots from a musical family heritage, starting in the ‘40s, where you could hear in their country, Guatemala, Central America, The Marimba Band “LOS RANAS” (Spanish for “The Frogs”) formed by their grandparents, parents and uncles.
Then, in the ‘80s “EL GRUPO RANA” (Spanish for “The Frog Band”) is created by their parents and uncles. They created ideas more modern, within the tropical category, especially with their rhythm SOCA.
In the year 2000, Ovi-G and the FROGGIES, comes in. Formed by the 3rd generation of this musical family, having ideas of making a mix with all the above: MARIMBA, SOCA, and TROPICAL.
OVI-G, Ovidio Giron, who is the musical director of this band, has formed part of many well-known bands in Guatemala and El Salvador, being his greatest accomplishment the Band “Grupo Rana” from Guatemala, as founder and owner, singer, drummer, musical director, composer and arranger and also making national (Guatemala) and international hits that after 20 years are still being heard today in many radio stations. He now lives in New Orleans, where he has been part of many local bands, and with his 3 children, now young adults, have formed this new band Ovi-G and the Froggies, who initiate from their home, musically guided by him.
The Froggies.
Michelle, Susseth, and Ovi-J, are Ovi-G’s children. Before the band was created they served musically with their father in different local churches, and in many different private and public events with folklore music from their country, including the Marimba. But in the year 2005 they realized they had a band, and decided to named the band Ovi-G and the Little Froggies, following their family’s heritage and participated for the first time and with great achievement, in the “FRENCH QUARTER FESTIVAL”. They eventually changed their name to Ovi-G and The Froggies. They have also been part of The Jazz Fest, The Baton Rouge International Festival, The Gretna Fest, Celebration Latina, Fiesta Latina, The City Park and Botanic Garden, Los Isleños Festival, The Tomato Festival, Carnaval Latino, Festival Latino in Baton Rouge, Natchez Steamboat Latin Party hosted by a local Spanish Radio, Heritage Month Celebration, Bayou Bacchanal.
Every year, they have the privilege to volunteer in-Home for the elderly-Relay for life for the Cancer-Charity events for the poor children in Central America.
Over the years they’ve gotten the opportunity to travel a lot inside Louisiana including Baton Rouge, Hammond, Slidell, New Orleans, Covington, Bogalusa, etc, and also out of state with their original music to places like Alabama, Mississippi, Los Angeles California, Maryland, Washington, Oklahoma, Florida, Delaware, Dallas, Corpus Christi, and Houston. They also went to Canada for The “Servus Heritage Festival”, which is one of the biggest festivals in the world.
Recently, due to the publics request of Ovi-G’s original music in his country, The Froggies were invited to Guatemala’s National Telethon, where over 20 millions dollars was raised to help care for many institutions around the country for the disabled children.
Ovi-G and the Froggies specialize in playing a variety of different music and styles, from Spanish to classic oldies and also a variety in Caribbean music. Besides festivals and special events, they participate in private events, weddings, fundraisers, etc.
Today, they have released their first CD, with 10 songs, where they have original music like “Dime Quien les Ganara (Who Dat?!)” which was a single used for the radio when the Saints won the Super bowl. They also did a song dedicated to New Orleans, “Soca in New Orleans”, with a music clip recorded in downtown New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.
Currently, you can find them in different and many events around town, and they keep recording new music for everyone to enjoy.

La Herencia Musical del Señor Ovidio Giron:
La herencia viene de una historia musical de familia de hace muchos años....donde en los años 40as podías escuchar la marimba “LOS RANAS” (compuesta por su padre, tíos y hermanos)... Después, en los 80as, con el famoso GRUPO RANA (Los Hijos), con ideas mas modernas dentro del genero tropical y con el ritmo creado por Ovidio Giron, SOCA.
Ya en el 2000, Ovi-G and The Froggies (Los nietos, junto a su padre) salen con un nuevo y refrescante sonido con una mezcla de todo lo anterior:
MARIMBA, SOCA, MERENGUE, SALSA y TROPICAL.
Ovidio Giron:
Ovidio Giron (Ovi-G), ha formado parte de muchos grupos famosos desde joven.
-A los 4 años de edad, Ovidio Giron, oriundo de Tecpan Guatemala, fue parte de la marimba “Arcoiris Infantil”, dirigida por su padre, José Ader Giron (Don Chepe Rana), marimba conformada por sus padres, hermanas y hermanos.
-A los 9 años fue parte de la “Marimba Olympia”, dirigida por su Tío Adán Giron y sus primos Oraldo y Jesús Giron, famosa marimba que muchos años antes fue parte de la película guatemalteca “El Sombreron”.
-A los 13 años fue becado del Conservatorio Nacional de Música, en la ciudad de Guatemala.
-A los 14 fue parte del recordado grupo “Opus 3”
-Después fue parte de la "Banda Siglo XX" de Guatemala, como trompetista, percusionista, y corista;
- También fue parte de la Marimba de Concierto “Marimba Herencia Maya Quiche” junto a los maestros Fernando Morales Matus y el Señor Benigno Mejía, donde se creó por primera vez la famosa danza de "El Paabanc" y también fue la primera Marimba de Concierto que existió en Guatemala, con quienes viajo a diferentes países como México, Centroamérica, y Suramérica, en especial Arequipa Perú, con el Ballet Moderno y Folklórico dirigido por Julia Vela, conjunto musical que después vino hacer la “Marimba de Bellas Artes”.
-A los 17 años de edad Ovidio Giron graba por primera vez un disco con Rolando Ortega y su grupo Almendra, como trompetista y corista, grupo conformado por Rolando Ortega, Truqui Trujillo, Edgar Solís, Héctor Zúñiga “El Nica”, y Jorge Ruiz “Coco”, donde por azar de la vida, el hace por primera vez su famoso grito “Raaaanaaa” como una profecía, no sabiendo que en el futuro eso iba ser su bandera de guerra.
En San Salvador:
-Fue parte del “Grupo Sagitario”, de San Salvador, tocando batería, congas, voces y trompeta, donde por primera vez canta como solista, alternando una noche en un concierto con el Sr. Roberto Carlos quien le ofreció llevárselo.
-Con “Vía Láctea” de El Salvador, tocando trompeta, percusión, también debutando como compositor y arreglista, con quienes graba por primera vez música cristiana.

Nuevo Proyecto en los Estados Unidos
Estando varios años ya radico en Estados Unidos, Ovidio proyecta esta nueva agrupación, Ovi-G y Los Froggies, acompañado por sus 3 hijos....
Como un honor a la tradición heredada por sus padres, Ovidio decidió ponerle OVI-G AND THE FROGGIES, lo cual significa: Ovidio Giron y Los Ranas, por 2 razones.
Numero uno- porque a el nunca lo llamaban por su nombre “Ovidio” en los grupos donde el participo, siempre le decían Rana o Ranita, (ej., Banda Siglo XX). En los discos grabados con Via Lactea del El Salvador, en el 78-79, el aparece en los créditos como Ovidio “Rana” Giron, antes de tener éxito en Guatemala.
Numero dos- y por esa razón, se le llamo “Grupo Rana”, no “Los Ranas” como el nombre de sus abuelos en los 40as.
El nuevo proyecto de el ahora se llama: OVI-G Y LOS FROGGIES.
Al principio participaban en varias iglesias locales y también en varios eventos públicos y privados....por primera vez y con mucho éxito participaron en dos de los mas reconocidos festivales de Louisiana, French Quarter Festival y Jazz Heritage Festival, interpretando música en ingles y español.

Cada año, tiene el privilegio de ser voluntarios en
-La Casa Hogar de los Ancianos-Relay for Life for Cancer-y en eventos de caridad para los niños pobres de Centro America.
El grupo ha viajado y se han presentado en Washington, Maryland, Delaware, Los Ángeles, Oklahoma, Corpus Cristi, Houston, Dallas, Canadá y en la Teletón de Guatemala.
Los integrantes de Los Froggies son:
Ovi-G, Ovidio Giron, quien es fundador, y con su gran talento y experiencia como cantante, arreglista y compositor, dirige al grupo en todo los aspectos musicales.
Michelle, es la pianista, cantante y coreógrafa del grupo.
Susseth, es bajista y cantante.
Y Ovi-J es el baterista, percusionista y cantante del grupo.
Tienen un CD con 10 temas y 2 videos musicales, uno hecho en New Orleans y otro en Guatemala. Lo mas importante para Los Froggies es poder representar su cultura hispana en todo el mundo, trayendo alegría a toda la gente con su música.
Actualmente, Ovidio Giron sigue grabando y haciendo música.
